Utheemu Ganduvaru IN Maldives

Utheemu Ganduvaru is situated in Utheemu Island, which remains one of the inhabited islands of HaaAlif Atoll. It is said to be the birth place of the national hero Sultan Mohamed Thakurufaanu. Thakurufaanu and his brothers are remembered till date because of their bravery in the war fought against the Portuguese for fifteen long years.

Utheemu Ganduvaru is primarily a wooden palace where Sultan Mohamed Thakurufaanu grew up. The palace is said to have housed many rulers of the Utheemu Dynasty. The roof and walls of the palace is built with coconut palm leaves whereas wooden pillars are used to support the ceiling. All of the ceiling, furniture and the doors are also made up of wood. The wood used in building the place is of different colour showcasing variety in the usage of woods to build this palace. White sand is used for the floor, reflecting the hard work of the ancestors of the island.

It has been well maintained, over the years by the staff member of the museum who take turns to escort the visitors around the palace. The 500 year old interior has its own story to be told. The palace also utilizes cocoons for various objects used by the rulers such as swings beds (made in a manner that it would keep oneself cool in the heat), elaborated wooden cravings, lamp that burns on coco palm oil and the huge palm thatched shed used by the guests visiting the palace.

Entry fee:

The entry fee to palace costs about Rf25 per person.

Opening and closing time:

The palace is open to public five days a week (Sunday to Thursday) from 9 am to 6 in the evening.

One could also go to the new mosque located near to the palace, to spend some prayerful time with the god almighty. The mosque is also an excellent custodian of the time showcasing natives’ mastery over the architecture. Relaxing on the beach of North Shore is also an outstanding activity to indulge in. The view of the sea from the beach is just breath-taking.
